Abstraction

This photo set is a collection of abstract photographs. After a quick google search of "abstract photos," I still didn't have the clearest understanding of this photo genre. Many of the "abstract" images that came up weren't abstract enough, like it was pretty clear to me what the subjects were. I had to take in to account my personal understanding of general abstract art to craft what I wanted my photos to look like. I want it to be harder for the audience to figure out what is in the photo and how big the subject is. For this photo set, I did a lot of cropping and a lot of editing of color. Black and white makes things a tad harder to identify. The photos that look like they're of motion (i.e. the last two) are actually still of the elevator catching light.

  1. These series of images gave me a very relaxed feeling because of the simplicity of them.

  2. Great work on this set of images Bethany. I think the reflections within your objects creates two main focal points, the solid background and the shade of the reflection. I really enjoyed your first, third, and fourth images because of the different layers and shades within the photos. Good job on this series!

  3. I like the elevator pictures the best because the warped nature of it prevents the showing of any depth in the photos, lending itself well to abstraction. I also like the completely white one with the plants, because the colors were very memorable as well as the gritty and prominent textures to give a slight sense of depth while keeping it somewhat abstract

  4. Bethany, I think your did an amazing job this week. I love the patterns and the texture you incorporated with each one of these photos. I love the lighting and how your edited them so that they all go well together. My favorite photos are the 3rd and 4th one which really caught my eye. I think you did an outstanding job this week and I don't have any suggestion. keep up the good work.

  5. I really love your use of black and white. It creates a very simple, yet complex dynamic. My favorite photograph in this series is the 9th one, because its very textured and interesting to look at.

  6. I really like the lighting in a lot of these pictures, I think it adds another level to the 'abstractness' of all the pictures and it really helps show the texture of object that were photographed.

  7. I really enjoyed the use of blur as well as black and white. It gave the photos a feeling of simplicity while at the same time being very interesting at the same time.

  8. I really enjoyed looking at these pictures because they were so simple and pleasing to look at. I especially liked the blur with the elevator photo because it was so simple but you can't tell exactly what it is at first glance.
