Symmetry, Asymmetry, and Balance

Image
This week, I was tasked with composing photographs with symmetry, asymmetry, and balance. Initially, I was tasked to do so with silhouettes but I found this challenging because my options for subjects were limited—I had to shoot into the sun and I only really got buildings and trees. On the last day I was allowed to branch out (no pun intended) because the weather was not ideal for this shoot. Though I tried to keep with this tone by making the other photos black and white. The black and white filter also helps make the photos look symmetrical—it eliminates color as a differentiating factor between the objects. Symmetry was especially hard to find out in the wild becuase nothing is really perfect, but I was able to find things nearly perfect. Symmetry Asymmetry Balance

Pictorial Lines

This week, I was tasked to show different types of pictorial line in photos—leading lines, decorative lines, and arrangement of lines. This is my first composition series this year. It being my second year taking photography, I've done published a "Pictorial Lines" series before. I found this task easier this year, but I noticed that I faced similar issues. It was harder for me to find arrangments of lines and it was easier for me to find decorative lines. In other words, it was easier for me to find these lines, but harder to isolate them. I tried to find a scene then find lines within it, as opposed to the other way around, finding lines then finding the scene. Leading to subject Decorative Arrangement

Still Life

Image
week, I was tasked with creating "Still Life" images, a genre that I had yet to explore. It took me a few classes to finally get my set up right– I experimented with artificial light, a lightbox with various fabrics, and a tri-pod.  The last 7 images (black and white, single shells with white/gray background) were the ones I took first. My objective was to get close to the shell, capturing it's natural details, while playing with the deep shadows that the shell casts on the lightbox and the way that the shell captures the artificial light. I like the contrast between the organic subject and the almost cold, inorganic background/setting. The black and white calls attention to the shadows, dark darks and light lights.  The first 8 images in the photo set were the photos that I took on my last day shooting. I used a different fabric in the light box– this time, black velvet which absorbs light really well. This fabric eliminated a lot of shadows, ma...
