Still Life

week, I was tasked with creating "Still Life" images, a genre that I had yet to explore. It took me a few classes to finally get my set up right– I experimented with artificial light, a lightbox with various fabrics, and a tri-pod.

The last 7 images (black and white, single shells with white/gray background) were the ones I took first. My objective was to get close to the shell, capturing it's natural details, while playing with the deep shadows that the shell casts on the lightbox and the way that the shell captures the artificial light. I like the contrast between the organic subject and the almost cold, inorganic background/setting. The black and white calls attention to the shadows, dark darks and light lights.

The first 8 images in the photo set were the photos that I took on my last day shooting. I used a different fabric in the light box– this time, black velvet which absorbs light really well. This fabric eliminated a lot of shadows, making the photos look crisper. I took my camera off of the tripod and started taking photos of the shells, juxtaposing each shell with a counterpart that would provide a balanced and visually striking image. Though putting these 8 photos in black and white would make my set more cohesive, the colors were captured very well by the light and the camera– they could not go unshowcased.

  1. I love this series! The way you used only shells for your subjects, but created very different and unique photographs is very impressive.

  2. Great job this week. I love how most of the photos are in color! I think it creates a very interesting photo which I like. I also like how you used all the same kind of objects, it made each of the photos cohesive with one another. I don't have any suggestion. keep the good work up!

  3. nice job with this series. i especially like the second half of the series, where the shadows come into play a bit more. the last shot especially is nice, with that huge shadow, even if the shot as a whole is a little dark.

  4. I love this series of photos and how you went about it. All of the photos look so simple and yet cause of the shell it also has a lot of detail within it.

  5. I really like how you were able to use the black background to highlight the colors on some of the shells to make them look really vibrant.

  7. I like how you used all shells and changed the angle of the photo to make the photo look different and used different editing to make two different kinds of photos.

  9. Bethany, these are awesome! I really like how you integrated a light tone in your photos while also keeping them black and white. I really think you did a wonderful job illuminating the subject to emphasize the "stillness" within your photos.
