Symmetry, Asymmetry, and Balance

This week, I was tasked with composing photographs with symmetry, asymmetry, and balance. Initially, I was tasked to do so with silhouettes but I found this challenging because my options for subjects were limited—I had to shoot into the sun and I only really got buildings and trees. On the last day I was allowed to branch out (no pun intended) because the weather was not ideal for this shoot. Though I tried to keep with this tone by making the other photos black and white. The black and white filter also helps make the photos look symmetrical—it eliminates color as a differentiating factor between the objects. Symmetry was especially hard to find out in the wild becuase nothing is really perfect, but I was able to find things nearly perfect.

  1. Hey there. I think the black and white is really great for this set of photos, giving it a great sense of cohesion. I think each photo works in its category, but some of the asymmetry photos like the basket with the onions would work better labelled as balance. Otherwise, nice work this week.

  2. I like how you used the black and white and I really like the silhouettes in the first couple of photos.

  3. I think your asymmetrical photographs are very strong. There super interesting to look at and my favorite one is the stairs with the shadow.

  4. I really liked how you focused on black and white for all of your photos. They all show the main points we were supposed to focus on (symetry, Asymetry and balance)

  5. Good work this week Bethany! I understand how difficult is was to display balance, symmetry, and asymmetry with silhouettes and shadows, but I think you demonstrated these concepts very well. Your best images are the ones with a darker tone with a lighter background. Great work.
